Karl Strauss was founded in 1989 by Karl Strauss, the man who helped reformulate PBR. It was the first brewery of any type to operate in San Diego since 1953, and the first-ever brew pub in San Diego. Today it is the third largest craft brewery in San Diego and has expanded into a chain of brewpubs throughout Southern California.
